Low Vision Rehabilitation Optometrist |
What to Expect from your Low Vision Rehabilitation Evaluation
During the low vision evaluation, your vision will be tested in order to develop a treatment plan to recommend new glasses and/or assistive devices which wil help you with everyday activities. Vision rehabilitation with an occupational therapist may also be recommended to help you use your remaining vision in new ways.
Your low vision optometric exam is completed by Dr. John Metzger, who is an optometrist specially trained in low vision rehabilitation. Your low vision evaluation is not invasive, however it is a very unique and extensive examination process. Depending on the complexity of your vision condition, your evaluation may last two to three hours.
For most patients, the first 45 minutes of your exam is spent with our specially trained occupational therapist. This evaluation will establish your unique needs and goals for visual independence. The second part of your appointment is the optometric examination and refraction for a new glasses prescription. Even if you have recently had a refraction, this is a NECESSARY part of your exam. The low vision refraction process in-depth and involves different equipment. You will also be evaluated for visual improvement from increased magnification, colored filters and more.
Medicare, supplemental insurance or vision care plans may reimburse for all or a portion of this type of exam. HOWEVER, WE ONLY PARTICIPATE IN MEDICARE PART B INSURANCE PLANS. You will be responsible for exam costs not covered by Medicare, such as the refraction (test for lens prescription up to $150), frames, lenses, low vision devices or exam procedures not fully covered by your Medicare/Supplemental plan.
PLEASE BE PREPARED TO PAY FOR YOUR REFRACTION AT THE TIME OF SERVICE. The refraction is not covered by Medicare or insurance and will range in cost depending on the complexity and length of time to perform the refraction. We will file all services to your Medicare and supplemental insurance for you.
If you have specific Medicare or supplemental insurance coverage questions, we recommend that you call your policy carrier.
When you receive a prescription for new glasses or purchase a device, it may be beneficial for you to schedule a follow up visit to be trained on how to most effectively use your new glasses and/or devices. The follow up visit is typically covered by Medicare and/or insurance.
If you have any questions, call us at 913-469-8686. We look forward to the opportunity to help you improve your visual independence.
